Take care of the security of your data! How easy it is to eavesdrop on a Wi-Fi transmission

Cybersecurity is the most crucial thing nowadays when talking about the internet. We want all our web applications to be secure. We ask our providers about security tests and pen tests. But sometimes, surprisingly, we forget about how we connect to the network, trusting almost every hotspot we can find in the air. Those without passwords are the first to be used because they are for free, and there is no need to share our private data to get access. But are we safe when connected? Aren’t we share any data with others? Let’s check it out.

Principal vulnerabilities of public, unencrypted networks

Most of us are unaware of a few essential things regarding unencrypted Wi-Fi hotspots. Those are:

  • All data packages transmitted through Wi-Fi are visible to anyone. If there is no encryption enabled, almost anyone can easily intercept our data.
  • Some hackers may create Wi-Fi hotspots to catch someone looking for free internet access and listen to the traffic generated by unaware people. Sometimes they can intercept a piece of fragile information that can be used for more sophisticated attacks or blackmail.
